Since changing my ISM topic from finance to economics, I realize that economics encompasses more than just finance, it includes understanding the political and social world too. This week I have attended the Professional Symposium, an event where professionals from various fields meet Friscoisd students. Through the event, I was able to grasp an understanding of what professionals do in their fields and their opinions and advice for individuals like me who seek a degree in economics. By talking to professionals in different fields than mine, they were able to give me insight into the relevance of my field to their field and in the general workforce.
Two particular meets made a significant impact on me. The first was of an information technology manager at Bank of America, who had limited experience in my field, but marveled at the relevance of economics, which further ignited my passion. By asking him for advice on my topic, he said to follow my passion and try to be more involved in the financial field. Although at the time I believed his advice to be vague, reflecting on his words now makes sense. As individuals try to level themselves up in the professional world, we often lose sight of our passions.
Another meet further stressed this idea. I had the opportunity to meet a hospitality manager for a hotel chain who had worked extremely hard to her goals. By describing my story and asking her about hers, I also asked her for advice on managing work-life balance. One important advice that she recommended was to follow my passion, because a professional can work hard and make money yet feel unfulfilled. Being authentic and passionate in one’s work allows us to truly find a purpose, a key idea that many professionals at the Professional Symposium stressed.
As I continue in the ISM program, I wish to have more experiences like the ones I had at the Professional Symposium. Although I was not able to meet many professionals near the economics/finance field, I was able to learn valuable lessons that professionals have discovered from experience. Ultimately, I will take their advice and apply it for the betterment of my future, so I can follow my passions and succeed.
